However, the effectiveness of the design would soon be recognized, as it's accuracy and rate of fire meant it was perfect for picking off zombies at a range. Being over 80 years old meant that they were hard to obtain. When the virus hit, M1 Garand's were an uncommon sight. While Rifles like the M1 Garand would be replaced with lower-caliber, higher-capacity weapons such as the M16 in the 1960's, it would remain an American Icon. This design turned out to be simple, reliable and effective, and became one of the most effective tools produced in the Second World War. Unlike the earlier bolt-action weapons it was replacing, the Garand was semi-automatic and fed through clips. The M1 Garand was quite advanced for it's time.
